Shivery Saturday morning for NSW

Drew Casper-Richardson, Saturday July 4, 2015 - 10:05 AEST

Sydneysiders awoke to the coldest morning since last winter on Saturday and more cold mornings are on the way.

The Harbour City cooled to 5.8 degrees just after 6am on Saturday making it the coldest morning in nearly a year. This is the third consecutive day where the city has cooled to seven degrees or less. Should the mercury drop below this mark on Sunday and Monday it will be the first time since 2007 that there have been five consecutive days of sub seven degree mornings. The current forecast is for it to drop to six degrees both days.

Those in the western suburbs would've certainly found it tough getting out of bed this morning. Camden dipped to a frosty -2.2 degrees and Campbelltown -1.6, this is five and six below average respectively.

The cold mornings were widespread for New South Wales with most districts recording minimums three to six degrees below average. Both Lithgow and Orange in the Central Tablelands dropped to minus five while Glen Innes in the Northern Tablelands also chilled to minus five. The nations capital didn't escape the nippy start to the weekend with a low of minus five, the sixth day in a row of freezing mornings.

The persistent cold mornings have been made possible thanks to a large slow-moving high pressure system combining with a cold airmass. The high has been bringing mostly clear night time skies and light winds - the perfect ingredients for very cold mornings.

This high will linger bringing a couple more cold mornings before cloud starts to increase, trapping the day's heat and allowing for closer to average morning temperatures.
