Shocking wake-up for QLD and the NT

Rob Sharpe, Thursday May 12, 2016 - 07:10 AEST

Cold air has suddenly enveloped Queensland and the Northern Territory, making it hard to get out of bed.

This morning is the coldest this year for virtually all of QLD and the NT, with some places as much as seven degrees colder than any other morning.

In QLD, Brisbane has plummeted to nine degrees this morning, more than seven degrees colder than any morning in the last fortnight. Coolangatta, Emerald and Kingaroy have seen their coldest morning since winter, falling to 5, 8 and 0.5 respectively.

This morning was the first frost of the season for a wide area, with Oakey dropping just below freezing. Its minimum of -0.2 degrees is six degrees colder than any other morning this season. Beaudesert and Amberley were both much colder, falling to two degrees with a light frost.

In the NT, Darwin has been enduring a seemingly endless run of warm nights, but this morning managed to drop to its May average of 22. Amazingly, this makes it the coldest morning of the year. Tennant Creek has seen its coldest morning since winter, falling to 13 degrees. Alice Springs has fallen to five degrees, two degrees colder than any other morning this year.

Over inland areas this morning has set a new standard. The rest of this week should see temperatures dipping to similar levels, meaning extra blankets will become the norm. On the coast however, such as in Brisbane, this morning is more of an anomaly. It will be a while until there is a chillier start than today.
