Showers drench parts of the NSW coast

Brisk southerly winds are driving showers onto coastal NSW with some places having their highest daily June total in five years.

A high pressure system in concert with a low over the Tasman Sea is directing brisk southerly winds and showers over eastern NSW. For central parts of the coast some of these showers and have been persistent and heavy.

In the five hours to 2pm Norah Head picked up 83mm of rain, 30mm of which fell in just one hour. This is already their highest one day total for June since 2013 when 126mm fell. Elsewhere Toukley has recorded 34mm and Nords Wharf Oval 38mm. With showers still streaming in off the ocean these totals are likely to increase as the day progresses.

Sydney has missed out on the heaviest of the rain with just 3mm recorded so far and most of western Sydney hasn't recorded any rain.

On Monday, the low over the Tasman Sea will shift eastwards, allowing for winds to ease and showers to become lighter with totals remaining below 10mm.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia. The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
