Showers soak southwest WA

A cold front swept across southwestern parts of Western Australia on Saturday, bringing gusty winds and widespread showers.

The South West Land Division generally experienced falls of 5-15mm with even heavier totals of around 30mm about the hills east of Perth.

Brookton saw its heaviest rain since May after collecting 15mm to 9am today, while Dwellingup had its best fall in a month picking up 30mm.

Perth city's 14mm was the best in a week and brings the monthly total to 148mm, about 20mm shy of its monthly average but now the wettest July in three years.

Gusty winds also accompanied the front as it swept through, reaching 85km/h at Mandurah, 83km/h at Cape Leeuwin and 74km/h at Ocean Reef.

Persistent westerly winds will mean light showers will continue across the region until the end of the month. However accumulated totals are unlikely to be much more than 5-10mm meaning many places will see close to or just below their long-term July averages.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
