Snow depth to rebound on Australian Alps

Brett Dutschke, Sunday August 13, 2017 - 14:52 AEST

Warming over the next few days will unfortunately lead to further snow melt, enhanced by increasing wind and rain during Tuesday. Thankfully, by next weekend the natural snow depth will have recovered to be even deeper than now.

A succession of strong cold fronts will bring frequent and occasionally intense bursts of wind and snow while progressively lowering the freezing level. Snowfalls between Wednesday 16th and Monday 21st should amount to 40-60cm on the main resorts with potential for more than 60cm. Much of this period will be quite windy, at times blizzard-like.

Conditions will ease into the following week with lighter winds and clearer skies. And it should easily be cold enough for snow making to top up the cover.
