Snow settles in central NSW

Snow was falling to low levels in southern and central NSW and the ACT on Tuesday morning as a pulse of cold air surged across southeastern Australia.

Flakes were seen falling at Blackheath and Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of NSW, while heavier accumulations stacked up in Oberon and other elevated areas of the state's Central Tablelands.

The snow was falling to even lower elevations further south including the ACT's Mount Ainslie, which peaks at a bit over 800 metres above sea level. Towns closer to the alps, including Adaminaby and Jindabyne, also received a dusting early on Tuesday morning.

This morning's low level snow in southeastern Australia comes after some of the main ski resorts collected 20-30cm of fresh cover during the last three days. And it's not over yet. A procession of cold fronts is likely to bring more snow this week and next.

A relatively weak front will bring a bit more snow to the Australian alps on Wednesday, before a stronger system causes heavier and more widespread snow this weekend. There are early indications that another snow-bearing cold front may cross the nation's southeast next week, boosting the season's growing base even further.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
