Snowfalls hit Tassie again

Tristan Meyers, Saturday August 29, 2015 - 16:10 AEST

A very cold airmass coupled with vigorous a low pressure system caused snow to fall to low levels in Tasmania last night and into this morning, leading to road delays and closures.

A road weather alert was issued yesterday afternoon for the Western, Central Plateau, Midland, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

Several motorists were trapped due to inclement conditions. Currently, Pinnacle Road at Mt Wellington is closed at the Springs, whilst four-wheel drive only conditions are in effect at Woodsdale Road from New Country March Road and Lake Dobson Road as well as Poatina Road from Poatina Village to Highland Lakes Road.

Although this event was not as widespread or down to a level as low as â??Snowbartâ?? on August 16th, last night still saw the snow level lowering to around 800 metres and as low as 500 metres in some locations.

Conditions will continue to be gusty and wet throughout today, with Hobartâ??s maximum temperature looking to top out at just 8 degrees, four degrees below the average for this time of year. Gusty winds are also adding at least four or five degrees of wind chill, making it feel at times just three degrees.

Conditions will improve over Sunday across Tassie as the low pressure system tracks northeast, with the snow level lifting to 1000 metres. Winds will also ease throughout the day and into Monday.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld.  The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
