Snowflakes dust eastern NSW

Residents in elevated eastern parts of NSW woke to find a few inches of snow on Saturday morning, thanks to the many cold fronts and cold-air systems that are are still crossing the southeastern parts of the country.

The airmass over NSW has been unrelentingly cooled by these systems that are making landfall in quick succession, lowering the freezing level sufficiently to make any precipitation that has and will fall over the tablelands and slopes to have at least some snow in the mix.

Snowfalls over regions other than the nation's alps were already reported on Friday, when snowflakes fell over the capital and made for an historic AFL match.

The Blue Mountains saw a 5-10 centimetres overnight and early on Saturday, leaving residents in places like Blackheath to enjoy a wintery landscape that is unlikely to melt entirely during the weekend, as cold winds continue to batter the state.

There are a number of weather warnings in place over the slopes and tablelands at the moment, including warnings to sheep graziers for very cold conditions, in addition to the severe weather warning for damaging winds.

More snowfalls are possible later on Saturday and early Sunday across the eastern parts of the state as a fresh wave of rainfall with a very low freezing level extends into the Northern Tablelands.

BoM declares El Niño over
