Some welcome rain on its way for southern Queensland

A rain bearing trough looks set to bring some relief to dry parts of southern Queensland.

For the first three months of the year, much of the Darling Downs district received around 60-80% of their average falls. March in particular was a very dry month with places like Oakey and Miles not recording more than 1mm. Infact Oakey hasn't seen any rain since late February.

Thankfully for many places like these across southern QLD, some relief is on the horizon. A rain bearing trough is currently making its way into western parts of NSW. Over the next few days the trough will move eastward bringing a band of showers and thunderstorms to this parched region of QLD.

From Saturday southwestern parts of the state will start to see isolated showers bringing a widespread 2-5mm across the Channel Country, with potential for up to 10mm. Even this amount of rain is likely to be welcome in places like Birdsville which has gone three months without any rain.

Further ahead, the trough will continue eastwards on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday when a widespread 5-10mm each day should fall across the Maranoa, Darling Downs and Southeast Coast districts. Given the nature of these showery troughs there is potential for isolated incidents on the ranges of as much as 100mm by the middle of next week. From mid-week conditions will begin to dry out as high pressure builds from the west.

BoM declares El Niño over
