Southeast hot season's sluggish start

Ben Domensino, Thursday November 17, 2016 - 11:18 AEDT

It's taking a while to heat up across Australia's southeast this season.

This may come as surprising news today, as temperatures climb to their highest level in eight months for some centres. Despite this late spring warmth, hot days have been cooler than they usually are so far this season.

New South Wales has not yet hit 40 degrees, which is unusual. It looks like the state will have its latest first 40 degree day of the season in six years. The last time the first 40 was as late the country was being gripped by one of the strongest La Ninas on record.

Victoria also hasn't had a 40 degree day so far this season, although this isn't as exceptional. The state didn't see its first 40 until the final day of November in 2014 and 2013 had none until December. Mildura could hit the mark early next week.

Further south, Tasmania is on tract to have its latest 30-degree days in at least four years. This type of heat was not experienced until November 29th back in 2012.

A negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and Le Nina-like conditions in the Pacific Ocean have helped suppress temperatures across Australia's southeast during October and early November this year.

Looking ahead, temperatures won't have as much trouble climbing during the next few months. The IOD has returned to neutral and Australia is about to transition into the warmer summer months.

Climate models indicate that temperatures will be above average across Australia's southeast during the start of summer.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia.  The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
