Southern Queensland feeling the tip of the iceberg

Jacobus Cronje, Saturday June 16, 2018 - 15:27 AEST

A cold airmass with clear overnight skies brought the coldest morning so far this year to parts of southern Queensland.

With hats and umbrellas currently being blown in every direction in the southeastern states, the only hint of the cold and windy weather occurring far to the south of Queensland was a was a crisp and cold Saturday morning.

Minimum temperatures plummeted to 5 degrees at the Brisbane airport in the early hours of the morning, while temperatures further inland dropped to one degree at Amberley and Greenbank. Places like Miles, Stanthorpe and Texas all recorded a minimum temperature of around -1 degree, while plummeting to a staggering -2.2 degrees at Oakey.

The lowest temperature recorded over the state on Saturday morning was -3.3 degrees at Kingaroy.

The cold airmass starting to affect southern Queensland is associated with the low pressure systems and troughs currently situated over southeastern Australia. Cold conditions were further enhanced by clear overnight skies under a high pressure system.

A similar pattern of cold mornings but settled and mild days can be expected over southern Queensland in coming days, as frontal activity becomes less significant and remains to the south of the state.
