Spike in heat for Sydney

A low pressure trough will briefly direct a hot airmass across the Sydney basin on Tuesday, causing the mercury to soar into the mid-30's.

The system will send gusty northwesterly winds across the region. These winds are likely to prevent the development of a well established seabreeze, which usually brings some relief to the city from the most intense heat.

The airmass will also be very dry, which, combined with the winds and heat, will result in an elevated Fire Danger Rating for Sydney and surrounds.

The dry, hot and windy conditions will also affect much of northern and eastern New South Wales on Tuesday, which will hamper efforts to contain fires in the state.

A southerly change should arrive in Sydney around the late-afternoon/early-evening, which will quickly drop the mercury to the high-teens upon arrival.

The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
