Spring snow on the downward slope

Ben Domensino, Thursday October 5, 2017 - 17:10 AEDT

Spring snowmelt is ramping up in Australia's alps, although this season's snowpack is not giving up without a fight.

Today's natural snow depth at Spencers Creek in NSW was 185.7cm, which is is the lowest level since late August and 55cm lower the season's peak depth from two weeks ago.

Despite this recent decline, today's snow depth is still the highest level this late in the season for 21 years.

While surrounding areas of southeastern Australia experienced exceptionally dry conditions and unusually high daytime temperatures during the last four months, the alps managed to enjoy a bumper snow season.

The peak depth of 240.9cm measured at Spencers Creek on September 20th was the best depth in 17 years.
