Storms strike Darwin

Ben Domensino, Wednesday March 8, 2017 - 16:20 AEDT

Thunderstorms are rolling across Darwin once again this afternoon.

The Northern Territory's capital city has already had a wet March to date thanks to the nearby passage of Tropical Cyclone Blanche earlier this week.

Darwin Airport recorded over 150mm of rain from Friday night to Tuesday morning, which is close to half of Darwin's monthly average rainfall for March.

Today's storms had already added another 29mm in a bit over an hour by 2:30pm.

The western Top End is having a good wet season. Some areas south of Darwin have already received over 400mm more than they typically would for the entire season, which runs from October to April. Darwin itself has seen close to 2000mm already, well above the wet season average of 1683mm.

Showers and thunderstorms will remain a feature across the Top End for the remainder of this week, with storms a chance in Darwin each day until at least the weekend.
