Storms to strike NSW and Queensland

Severe thunderstorms are possible in parts of Queensland and NSW during the next two days.

The interaction of a cold air mass moving up from the Southern Ocean with a much warmer air mass over the Australian continent will lead to widespread showers and thunderstorms in Queensland and NSW on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thunderstorms are likely to develop across a broad area of NSW and in parts of western, central and southern Queensland on Wednesday. Most of these storms won't be intense enough to cause severe weather, although some areas could see damaging winds and large hail.

The best chance for severe thunderstorm activity on Wednesday will be along the northern half of the coast and ranges in NSW. Some storms in southwest Queensland may also produce damaging wind gusts.

On Thursday, the focus of the storm activity will shift into northeast NSW and southeast and central Queensland. There is a better chance that thunderstorms will become severe on Thursday, particularly in southeast and central Queensland. Damaging winds and large hail are the most likely threats, although heavy rain and flooding can't be ruled out.

Showers and thunderstorms should become more confined to central and northern Queendland from Friday as a high pressure ridge develops over NSW.

In addition to the showers and storms over the next couple of days, parts of Queensland and NSW will also experience Very High fire danger ratings as hot air combines with blustery winds ahead of an approaching trough.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
