Stormy end to October for NSW

Ben Domensino, Wednesday October 26, 2016 - 12:46 AEDT

It will be a thundery end to the week in New South Wales, with storms possible each day from now until Sunday.

A near-stationary trough of low pressure will help thunderstorms develop on Thursday and Friday across central and northeastern parts of the state.

The storms will be convective in nature, meaning they are fueled by the day's heating and are therefore most likely to develop during the afternoon. There is a chance these storms could produce hail and gusty winds.

The trough will weaken a bit on Saturday, although there will be enough instability lingering in the atmosphere to produce showers and storms about the northeast and possibly over the central inland.

Sunday will cap the week off with more showers and thunderstorms, thanks to a cold front moving into the state from the southwest later in the day.

Showers and thunderstorms on Sunday will initially target western and southern districts, although could reach other areas as the front moves towards the Tasman Sea later on Sunday and on Monday.

Drier conditions and a break in storms is expected on Tuesday as a high pressure system takes hold across New South Wales.

It will be worth keeping an eye on the radar and warnings between now and Monday to see if a anything is heading your way. All thunderstorms contain lightning, which is dangerous even if it's not classified as a severe storm.
