Stormy skies for Alice Springs

With the start of the spring season well under way, Alice Springs and other locations over the central interior of Australia have enjoyed a run of thundery weather over the last couple of days.
The thunderstorms over the Red Centre have been a result of deepening low pressure troughs extending from the northern parts of the country into the southern interior, often linking with cold fronts sweeping over the southern parts.
So far this month, Alice Springs has seen at least six thunderstorm days, resulting in more than 10mm of rainfall.
This is already above the long-term September average of 8.2mm falling over two days on average.
Looking ahead, it's likely the the central interior will receive more thunderstorms today and at least one other day before month's end, possibly resulting in a further 10-15mm of rainfall.
Although September rainfall will far exceed the long-term monthly average, a record rainfall month is unlikely, considering the record currently stands at 89.7mm that fell in September 1897.
