Strong and gusty change buffeting Sydney

Anthony Duke, Wednesday October 7, 2015 - 06:37 AEDT

After a four-day run of exceptional early-season heat across Sydney, commuters will be greeted with a cool blast when they step out of the door this morning.

It had been a very warm night with temperatures still up at 22 degrees at 4:30am on Wednesday. It could have been the warmest October night in seven years but fortunately for those struggling to sleep, a cool change arrived.

The powerful southerly change had moved up the NSW coast overnight and reached southern parts of the city at around 5am. The strong southerly winds brought gusts of 83km/h at Kurnell and 75km/h at the airport shortly after the change. The exposed cliffs of the Royal National Park saw 95km/h gusts.

This morning, winds will remain strong and gusty, particularly in eastern parts of the city. A Severe Weather Warning highlights the risk of 90km/h wind gusts on the coastal fringe for a time this morning, strong enough to bring down branches of trees. And it is also quite a dry change, so there will be a lot of blowing dust and pollen. Wind will steadily ease during the afternoon as a front moves further north along the coast.

Temperatures are going to be noticeably cooler and will feel especially cool given the strong winds. Daytime temperatures for the next two days will be 16 degrees cooler than the start of the week. But even so, these sorts of temperatures are much closer to normal, tracking just a degree below the October average.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld.  The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
