Summer to winter skipping autumn

Max Gonzalez, Sunday May 29, 2016 - 12:49 AEST

Although temperatures across the southern states have been more seasonal over the recent days, temperatures along the eastern seaboard have remained quite balmy.

So far, 2016 has been a warm one for most of Australia. El Nino and the underlying global warming are the main two factors contributing to the observed temperatures. Autumn as a whole has been particularly warm to the delight of all warm blooded mammals.

In Adelaide, daytime temperatures for May are currently tracking one degree warmer than average, while Melbourne is tracking two degrees above the norm.

Our nation's capital on the other hand, is also tracking warmer than average for May with both night and daytime temperatures about two degrees above the norm.

If you are in Sydney and love the summer, May would have been a treat as night-time temperatures are tracking two degrees above the norm and nearly four degrees above average for daytime temperatures.

Further up north, Brisbane nights are tracking about two degrees above the average with daytime temperatures close to three degrees above the norm.

Over the past few days a cold air mass has made its way north across the south and east, bringing the first real taste of winter. In Sydney, temperatures failed to reach 15 degrees yesterday making it the coldest day since June 2015. This is only two weeks after the Harbour City registered its warmest day (28 degrees) this late in autumn since 1923.

Further north, Rockhampton broke on Friday (third time this month!) it hottest May day reaching 34.4 degrees (since records began at the airport in 1940). Luckily, the cold air mass will finally make its way through QLD central coast today dragging temperatures back to normal.

A high pressure ridge will bring once again plenty of sunshine and warmth during the day but nights are likely to be chilly under clear skies and light winds for most of the southeast. But fronts will return later this week heralding the start of the winter season.
