Summer's in the air in Sydney

Rob Sharpe, Sunday October 16, 2016 - 12:27 AEDT

Hot and smoky air is giving Sydneysiders a whiff of summer this weekend, but cooler days will return.

On Saturday the mercury rose to 29 degrees in Penrith, whilst the city was limited to 24 degrees by a gusty sea breeze. Smoke filled the nostrils of many Sydneysiders as hazard reduction burns took place in many parts of the Basin.

Overnight and early this morning parts of Sydney was experiencing hazardous air quality, particularly near the Roseville Chase hazard reduction burn.

During Sunday morning smoke lifted, improving air quality. Temperatures have soared as well, reaching into the low 30's in most suburbs.

Tonight, air quality will be a little better than last night as gusty winds prevent the smoky air from settling near the surface.

The gusty winds are an indication that a cold front is on its way. The front will roll through on Monday, bringing a few showers and a drop in temperatures, likely limiting heating to the mid 20's until mid week.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
