Sunday is washing day in Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle

Rob Sharpe, Saturday August 30, 2014 - 12:13 AEST

It's been a sopping wet August along the New South Wales coast with most areas seeing their wettest August in over a decade and one of the wettest on record.

From the Illawarra to the Hunter it has been the wettest August in 16 years, despite 10 or 11 dry days to start the month. Sydney was fairly representative of the region, with 16 days of rain and over 200mm. This is the most days of rain in a single month since the 'February to forget' almost two years ago, which saw 165mm across 17 days.

The seemingly continuous threat of rain has led to massive build up of dirty clothes in baskets, buckets and floors from Newcastle to Wollongong. Only the brave and the foolish have been utilising outdoor lines in the last two weeks, with limited success. Yet, there is a hope in the forecast.

Earlier this week many people desperate to get the clothes clean spotted Sunday as the next best day, and with good reason. Today's showers strewn along the coast will clear during Sunday morning, with most places dry by sunrise, with pretty safe washing weather from late morning.

On Sunday the sun will shine across all of NSW, with the only partly cloudy areas in the Hunter and northern parts of Sydney.

For those people with more exciting plans than washing the clothes on Sunday, there is still the excellent option of washing on Monday. It will also be a great day, reaching a seemingly sweltering top of 24 degrees under partly cloudy skies.

Whatever washing gets put out in the next few days needs to be in by Monday night as a cold front will sweep through with showers on Tuesday.

Thankfully, during September we shouldn't be having the same washing dilemma because there will only be occasional wet days interspersed between the frequent dry ones.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld.  The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
