Sunday starts out squally in the southwest

Tristan Meyers, Sunday July 31, 2016 - 16:05 AEST

A large and vicious cold front has swept through southwestern parts of Western Australia, bringing severe weather.

A Severe Weather Warning that was recently cancelled extended across the Lower West, South West, South Coastal, South East Coastal and Great Southern. In the early hours of this morning, howling winds clocked up a 116 km/h gust at Cape Leeuwin. At 10:30am, a gust of 78 km/h was recorded at Jandakot.

The front also brought a substantial increase in ocean height with a storm surge, and additionally caused a large swell increase. Swell has increased to nearly eighty metres at Cape Naturaliste and just over six metres at Rottnest Island; this mammoth size is likely to cause pockets of coastal erosion. Although tides are higher-than-normal, coastal inundation is no longer expected. However, some places are yet to see their peak in wave heights, but it will occur later today or tonight.

A few isolated storms are also tearing across the southwest of WA in cold and unstable air, but they will become less frequent throughout the day, becoming noticeably clearer by the afternoon. Additionally, winds and the frequency of showers will also ease into the afternoon as a high pressure system quickly builds from the west.

Generally, Monday will be a more settled day after a noticeably cooler morning, a dramatic turn from today. Mostly sunny conditions will persist for the start of the working week before another front arrives later on Wednesday.
