Sunny skies set to welcome Sydney to Hobart contestants

Kim Westcott, Saturday December 27, 2014 - 13:21 AEDT

There is nothing like watching the yachts enter the River Derwent at the end of the spectacular race and Sunday will be a splendid day to do so.

After a grueling 628 nautical mile race, the sun will be out with light winds in Hobart. It will warm up gradually throughout the day, reaching the mid-twenties in the afternoon.

The weather will take a turn for the worse on Monday afternoon as a cold front approaches, bringing showers throughout the evening. Tuesday will be a cool and windy day, with the mercury hovering in the high teens but the gusty winds will make it feel cooler with a few showers thrown in for good measure.

The sun will make an appearance again for New years Eve, reaching around the 20 degree mark. The showers will return for the first day of the year as another cold front brushes over the state.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
