Sunny to stormy for western Sydney

After a mostly clear and sunny start to yesterday western parts of Sydney saw cloud build and temperatures fall, with thunderstorms rolling in by early afternoon.

Storms sparked up about the ranges before heading east towards western parts of Sydney, with over 11,000 lightning strikes recorded within 30km of Penrith. As the storms past, temperatures also dropped significantly, with Penrith losing around 6 degrees in about an hour.

With weak steering winds storms struggled to progress any further east, dying out by the time they reached the area around Fairfield.

Thunderstorms are forecast each day for the week ahead across NSW as a low pressure trough extending down from QLD gradually drifts eastward. The best of chance for Sydney in coming days looks to be Monday and Tuesday, however at this stage it is most likely for western suburbs, with only a slight chance for Metropolitan Sydney.
