Sunshine state storms

A well defined band of showers and thunderstorms moved over southern parts of Queensland yesterday evening, extending from the NSW border to Bundaberg.
Lightning within this band of thunderstorms was particularly active, with over 7800 strikes recorded within 200km of Toowoomba.
These storms generated some healthy rainfall, with some of the most significant totals collecting in a month and a half. Redland and Sunshine Coast Airport both picked up the heaviest totals since late June with 16mm and 15mm respectively.
Areas of rain then trailed the main storm front with Lake Baroon collecting the heaviest falls state wide. To 9am today, 54mm collected, followed by Parrearra which saw 30mm within the same period.
While thunderstorms are fairly uncommon for this time of the year in QLD, it gave us a good preview of the upcoming transition period where thunderstorms can be particularly active leading into the severe weather season.
On this occasion, these storms were not severe with no damaging wind gusts, heavy downpours or hail recorded.
The risk of thunderstorms over QLD has now passed as the low pressure trough moved offshore. This coming week conditions are looking generally stable and settled with sunshine returning to the southeast.
