Surfers rewarded for chilly dawn patrol

James Casey, Thursday October 2, 2014 - 12:59 AEST

Sydneysiders woke to the chilliest morning in two weeks, cooling to 10 degrees in the city and some beach suburbs, as a clean two metre swell combined with light westerly winds to provide some great conditions for experienced surfers.

Yesterday's strong southerly winds with a cold front caused the south swell to peak in the afternoon at around 2.5 metres. However, gusty southerly winds made conditions too choppy for any quality waves.

Winds eased overnight as a ridge of high pressure moved over the city allowing it to cool down and allow surfers to make the most of the south swell. Winds will remain light throughout the day and swing to the north allowing south facing beaches to score some great waves before winds turn east later this evening. The swell will gradually ease today bottoming out at around 1.5 metres this evening.

Tomorrow, winds will remain light and variable with waves lingering around 1.5 metres before another pulse of southerly swell moves through Sydney's beaches on Saturday morning. Weekend warriors will be happy to hear this swell will be a bit bigger than the previous swell and with a solid 16-18 second period. Northerly winds will also create some great conditions for your favourite south-swell, north-wind option.

Those planning on heading to the beach should speak to lifeguards before jumping in the water as the powerful surf will be hazardous.
