Sweltering night for northern NSW

The mercury has failed to fall below 30 degrees through parts of the Hunter and Northern Tablelands overnight.

Temperatures only fell to an overnight low of 30.7 degrees near midnight at Scone, though it hovered close to 33 degrees through most of the night. Residents have sweated through over 29 hours straight of temperatures above 30 degrees.

Despite the scorching night, the official minimum temperature was recorded at 9am on Friday at 25.9 degrees. This is because minimum temperatures are taken from 9am to 9am.

Further north, Narrabri felt the heat last night with a low of 30.2 degrees while Moree sweated through a minimum of 27.9 degrees.

This unusual night time heat was due to hot, dry and strong northwesterly winds in combination with thick cloud cover.

Unfortunately, the cloud cleared early this morning and has lead to another hot day through New South Wales under mostly sunny skies. This heat and cloud is marching north to Queensland tonight, with Winton expected to see a minimum of 30 degrees and Brisbane a low of 26 degrees tomorrow morning.

A cool change will move through this afternoon for the Hunter and overnight through northern NSW and bring some needed relief from the relentless heat. Southern QLD should see the change around the late afternoon on Sunday with the rest of QLD cooling down somewhat by Monday morning.
