Sydney-Melbourne rivalry heats up in favour of the city on the Yarra

Max Gonzalez, Tuesday August 26, 2014 - 13:06 AEST

The long standing rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne has long divided nearly 50% of the Australian population. AFL vs NRL along the Barassi Line is just one example, but this week it will be the weather that will be taking central stage.

On average, Sydney is warmer than Melbourne during winter and early spring. When comparing the daytime temperatures, Sydney is nearly two degrees warmer on average than Melbourne during August and about three degrees warmer in September.

This week, an east coast low and trough are directing heavy rain and showers along the New South Wales and southern Queensland coasts while a high over the Tasman Sea is keeping clear skies over Victoria. The clear skies will allow for plenty of sunshine over Australia's second most populous city with temperatures in the high teens, even reaching the low 20s over the weekend.

Sydney on the contrary, will be drenched with temperatures struggling to reach the high teens over the next few days. All in all, Melbourne will be the clear winner for the first time since 1993, being about a degree warmer than Sydney during the last week in winter.

We have to go back to 1993 to find the last time Melbourne ended winter with a warmer week than Sydney. Comparing daytime temperatures, back in 1993 Melbourne was on average 1.8 degrees warmer than Sydney during the last week in August. However, the 7-day period to the 30th of August 1993 saw a whopping difference of 2.3 degrees difference tipping towards Melbourne.

Although this is true for the last week in winter, Melbourne has seen two warmer 7-day periods compared to Sydney during August in the past 20 years. Melbourne was 0.5 degrees warmer than Sydney during the 7-day period to the 25th of August 2007 and 1.3 degrees warmer in the 7-day period to the 25th of August 2011.

For once, Melbourne won't be true to its four seasons in one day with just spring a clear winner while Sydneysiders look south of the border in jealousy.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
