Sydney shivers through chilliest mornings in five years

Getting out of bed would have been difficult for many Sydneysiders over the past five mornings as the Harbour City shivered through its coldest stretch since 2010.

In the city, the mercury has fallen to seven degrees or below for the fifth consecutive morning today, the coldest stretch since late June/early July 2010.

Western suburbs have not been spared either with frost commonplace across the last three-to-four mornings. Badgerys Creek has fallen below 0 degrees for three consecutive mornings, its coldest stretch since 2010, while Richmond has dipped below -1 degrees the last two mornings.

The run could be extended tomorrow with the city forecasted to dip to seven degrees, which would make it the coldest six-morning stretch since 1995. However with winds set to increase ahead of a cold front, it is more likely the mercury will stay a little above this mark.

The chilly run has been due to a colder than average airmass and clear skies and light offshore winds caused by a broad region of high pressure, allowing any daytime warmth to quickly disperse.

Mornings will become a touch warmer from Wednesday as cloud increases in response to frontal systems, before becoming colder again next weekend.
