Sydney's cold outbreak almost over

Sydney's run of cold weather has continued today but when can we expect it to warm up?

Considering last autumn was the warmest on record the past few wintry days have been a shock to the system for many.

Since Friday last week we have had the coldest June morning in six years for Sydney and snow has fallen on the Blue Mountains not once but twice. Today the cold continues and if it stays below 16.5 degrees it will make it the coldest four day spell in four years. This is even colder than the middle of each winter since 2012.

So why is it so cold and when is it going to warm up?

Well, two significant cold fronts in quick succession have kept the temperature down longer than normal.

'Warming up' is always relative. Compared to today we will see a warmer day on Tuesday with it set to heat to 18 degrees, a degree warmer than the long term June average, and bringing an end to the run of cold days. Although we won't see many locals sunbaking on the beach, the high teens and low twenties are considered 'warming up' for this time of year.

So go buy a nice warm jumper, maybe a beanie and gloves if you like, and settle in for at least another week of sub 20-degree daytime temperatures but also another two months of winter.
