Sydney's record spring dry spell

Sydney is one day away from registering its longest spring dry spell on record.

Despite a few showers in the Sydney basin yesterday and overnight, the city's rain gauge at Observatory Hill once again failed to record any precipitation during the 24 hours to 9am today.

This has extended the city's rainless run to 26 days in a row, which is the longest dry spell in four years and the longest to occur during spring since 1988.

If no rain is recorded at Observatory Hill before 9am tomorrow, Sydney's dry spell will reach 27 days. This will beat the spring dry spell of 1988 and become the longest run of rainless days during spring since records commenced in 1858 (159 years).

The previous spring record of 26 consecutive dry days occurred twice, in 1988 and 1951. Sydney's longest dry spell on record lasted for 47 days from July 18th to September 2nd in 1995.

With only 0.2mm of rain recorded at Observatory Hill between the start of September and 9am today, Sydney is currently experiencing its driest start to spring on record.
