Sydney's smokey start to Saturday

Guy Dixon, Saturday May 7, 2016 - 09:42 AEST

Sydney-sider's woke to a blanket of haze this morning, primarily in the north as light westerly breezes wafted smoke from hazard reduction burns inland towards the coast.

Multiple hazard reduction burns were carried out in the Blue Mountains yesterday, with more planned today. Northern and western parts of the Sydney basin are also in line for controlled burns today, including Penrith and the Hills District.

A strong inversion is also playing a part in this phenomenon, by trapping the smoke in a layer close to the earth's surface.

For those who are susceptible to respiratory conditions, stay inside, minimise physical exertion and keep your medication on hand.

A northeasterly seabreeze should develop later in the morning and into the afternoon, which should help to disperse this thick blanket of smoke.
