Tasmania running weirdly warm

It's a never-ending summer in Tasmania, with late-season heat persisting across the state.

In particular, it's been unseasonably warm in Tasmania the past couple of days - last night was the hottest April night in over 20 years for Bicheno. It was also the warmest night this late in the season in 11 years in Hobart and nine years for Flinders Island.

Temperatures were as much as 10 degrees above the norm in Melton Mowbray, Liawenee and Lake St Clair.

However, although fresh in the memory, it's not just the last few days that have been strangely warm. Each and every station with histories being maintained for 30 years or more are recording a warmer than normal April.

Some places, including Hobart, have been running as much as three degrees above average. Daytime maximums have been averaging 20.5 degrees. With the the next few days likely to reach 20 degrees or warmer, Hobart is on track for its warmest April in more than 120 years of records, smashing the previous record of 19.3 degrees set in 1993.

Across the state, the warm conditions should persist into the beginning of May, when an onslaught of cold fronts will cause a dramatic departure from the almost summer-like conditions currently being experienced.

Although this weekend will herald a front that is sure to bring areas of heavy rain to the north and west as well as some gales across the coasts, the real vigorous front looks to arrive around Monday 2nd, bringing a very cold air-mass, showers and potentially damaging winds.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
