Tasmania sets new minimum temperature record

Liawenee registered a bone-chilling minimum temperature of -14.2 degrees this morning, setting a new record for Tasmania.

Clear skies, light winds, lingering cold air and a snow-covered ground all helped temperatures plummet across Tasmania's central highlands on Thursday night.

At 6:01am on Friday, Liawenee registered a temperature of -14.2 degrees. This is the lowest temperature ever reliably recorded in Tasmania and the equal lowest temperature in Australia during the last nine years.

Tasmania's previous minimum temperature record was -13.0 degrees, which occurred at Tarraleah Village, Butlers Gorge, and Shannon on 30th June 1983. It's worth pointing out that the current Liawenee weather station only opened in 2001, so it was not observing temperatures during the cold snap of 1983.

Australia's lowest temperature on record stands at -23.0 degrees from Charlotte Pass in the NSW alps on 29th June, 1994.
