Temperatures matching season for Perth

Jess Miskelly, Saturday November 30, 2019 - 14:05 AEDT

The WA capital will have a hot week to correlate with the first week of summer, unlike the eastern capitals which will be unseasonably cool for December's beginning.

Heat bearing easterly winds will strengthen over Perth in the coming days, dragging heat south from the tropics to peak around Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecast maxima on these days are 39 and 37 degrees respectively - not record breaking but definitely high for this early in the season. Overnight/morning minima are also forecast to be well above average at 22 degrees on both Tuesday and Wednesday so it will certainly feel like the first week of summer.

Spring was also warm for Perth, with maximum temperatures averaging the warmest since 2015. This was at least partially aided by the second warmest day on record for the city in early September and greater than 40 degree day in November. By contrast, October was close to average.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
