The week ahead for NSW

A cold front is passing over southern parts of New South Wales, with cold air in its wake and unusually warm air ahead of the system over central and northern areas.

The front will generate showers over southern parts of the state during Tuesday and Wednesday. In elevated and Alpine areas, these showers will fall as snow, with two day totals of over 15cm expected.

Winds will be gusty today around central and southern areas and continue about elevated areas along the ranges tomorrow, although easing.

It has been very dry and warm in the north. Dubbo has felt the last four days at least two degrees above the July average and eight degrees above the average yesterday. Similarly, Bourke has felt the last two days at least five degrees above the July average daytime temperature. Grafton has also experienced over a week of above July average daytime temperatures.

In the wake of the passing front, lingering cool air and moisture brings the risk of frost along and adjacent to the ranges, mainly tomorrow and Thursday, with the potential to extend into the weekend.

Looking further ahead, a high pressure system will move over the majority of the state in the coming days, maintaining daily temperatures mostly above the July average.

Areas to the west of the ranges should see daytime temperatures range between the high teens and low twenties. Along the ranges and adjacent slopes in the south, daily temperatures should reach between seven degrees and the mid-teens. Along the ranges and adjacent slopes in the north, daily temperatures will reach between the mid-teens and low twenties. Overnight temperatures could drop to near zero with clear skies.

Rainfall is likely to be confined to southern and eastern areas of the state for the remainder of the week. In central, western and northern areas of NSW, only Bourke airport, Mount Boyce and Casino airport have reached their respective July average rainfall so far.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
