Three day deluge at kunanyi / Mount Wellington

More than 300mm of rain has fallen at the top of kunanyi / Mount Wellington during the last three days, setting a new record for Tasmania's iconic mountain.

During the 72 hours to 9am on Wednesday, a rain gauge at the mountain's peak received 319.2mm of rain. This was its highest three-day total on record for any month. It's also about four times its monthly average.

It's worth pointing out that rainfall observations at the peak of kunanyi / Mount Wellington are a bit patchy, although there's fairly good coverage of data going back to 1990 and from 1961 to 1972.

Within the available dataset, the previous three-day record was 292mm during the 72 hours ending at 9am on 11th February, 1996.

Hobart's 58.4mm during the last three days was its wettest trio of days since May 2018 and an 11 year high for June.
