Thunderstorms to be set loose on southeast QLD

Brisbane and surrounding areas should brace themselves for a wet afternoon as showers and thunderstorms become widespread.

A low pressure trough is moving into southeastern Queensland this afternoon, causing the hot and moist unstable air to produce widespread showers and thunderstorms. The focus of the precipitation will be along the ranges from the New South Wales Northern Tablelands through to western parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett district. Brisbane is also likely to see a few showers developing during the afternoon before the moving trough sets thunderstorms loose in the late afternoon and evening.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely to be fairly slow moving today, bringing a significant risk of flash flooding. It is therefore important for residents to keep track of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

Tomorrow, the trough will have moved a bit further north and inland, meaning that the showery southeasterlies along the NSW coast will set up in southeastern QLD. The region of thunderstorms will focus a bit further north, affecting the Wide Bay and Burnett, Capricornia and the neighbouring inland districts.

On Saturday, the weather will be pretty similar to Friday, but then on Sunday a high pressure system off the NSW coast will push further into southeastern QLD, leading to generally drier conditions, with mostly sunny skies across the Southeast Coast.
