Thunderstorms to intensify over northern Australia, research finds

Thunderstorms are expected to become more intense over Australia's tropics in the future, according to a new research paper published this week.
A study published by researchers from Australia and America this week has found that that the intensity of thunderstorms over our planet's tropics could increase as global temperatures rise this century.
The study is based on the premise that the amount of energy available for thunderstorm development will increase in our planet's tropics, including northern Australia, as global surface temperatures rise.
It is well documented that warm air near the surface is one of the key ingredients for thunderstorm development.
It's worth noting that this study does not reveal how much more intense thunderstorms are likely to be in the future, or where they will form. However, it does highlight that the ingredients for more intense storms could be present in spades as global temperatures rise throughout this century.
