Thundery wake up call for the Northern Rivers

Those in parts of the Northern Rivers had a thundery wake up call
on Sunday morning as a storm rumbled overhead.

The storm formed in the small hours of Sunday morning to the
southwest of Grafton which saw a Severe Thunderstorm Warning
issued for parts of the Northern Rivers. The storm reached Grafton
at around 5:30pm bringing plenty of rain and lightning. Grafton
itself picked up 51mm, nearly all of which fell from 5am. As the
storm moved east it gained intensity and dropped 79mm of rain on
Pillar Valley.

The low pressure trough responsible will trigger further storms
for large parts of eastern NSW on Sunday. Storms are likely from
the Queensland border right down to the Illawarra. Any storms that
form have the potential to become severe most likely near the
coast. Heavy rain and damaging wind gusts are the most likely
features however large hail cannot be ruled out.

On Monday the trough will contract to the northeast corner of
state, restricting any storm activity to that area. The remainder
of the state will remain mostly dry.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia. The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
