Unseasonable warmth affecting southeast QLD

Warmth not seen at this time of year in more several decades is affecting southeast Queensland this weekend.

A broad low pressure trough has been slowly moving across the country during the last week, gathering with it a pool of very warm air.

While this trough has been producing cloudier conditions and rain further south, clearer skies over southeast QLD are allowing daytime temperatures to push into the high 20s.

Brisbane is heading for 28 degrees today, which would make it the warmest day this late in the cooling season since 2004. After reaching 27.6 degrees on Saturday, it would also be the warmest pair of days since 1962 for this time of the year.

Roma is heading for its third consecutive day exceeding 28 degrees, its warmest spell this late in the cooling season on record.

The unusual warmth over the weekend period will mean many will take the opportunity to flock to the beach before winter sets in.

And winter will set in on cue, with temperatures dropping up to 10 degrees by the first day of June. Nights will become particularly chilly, with temperatures likely to dip below freezing over inland areas.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
