Upper Western NSW starts spring 40 degree heat

Sam Brown, Sunday October 26, 2014 - 12:42 AEDT

Yesterday, the majority of the Upper Western district in New South Wales experienced their first 40 degree day for spring this year.

Wilcannia and White Cliffs reached 42 degrees, Bourke and Tibooburra stepped up to 41 and Cobar hit 40. Cobar's 40 degree heat yesterday was the first time the town has reached 40 degrees in October since 1965.

Bourke, Brewarrina, Wilcannia, Cobar, White cliffs and Tibooburra have not dropped below 35 degrees in at least six days. Cobar again, has not had a 6 day run of 35 degree plus heat in October since at least 1992. Tibooburra has averaged 38 degrees this past week, making it the hottest week in at least 100 years.

Overnight temperatures have also been very warm, with the majority of the Upper Western staying at least 5 degrees above the October average last night. Tibooburra and Fowlers Gap both were 9 degrees above their October averages reaching 23 and 22 degrees respectively.

A large portion of the Upper Western is likely to reach up to 40 degrees today apart from the far southeast around Cobar, where it may still reach 39 degrees.

Relief is on the way, with a cool change moving over the region on Monday morning. Temperatures may drop by more than ten degrees in comparison to Sunday's temperatures. Gusty southwesterly winds will also filter over the region in the wake of the change.
