Victoria bracing for more heavy rain tonight

Ben Domensino, Tuesday September 20, 2016 - 14:32 AEST

There are are fears of landslides and flash flooding in northern and western Victoria tonight as the state prepares for another bout of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

A low pressure system moving into northwest Victoria will spread rain across the state this evening and into Wednesday morning. Showers are expected to ease on Thursday as the low continues to move east.

During the next 24 hours, widespread falls of 10-30mm are likely in western, central and northern Victoria, although isolated higher rainfall totals of 50mm are possible. This rain may cause both flash flooding and renewed river flooding.

Rivers are already overflowing following a string of recent rain events, with flood watches in place for a number of catchments in the state's west. Major flood warnings are also in effect today for the Avoca and Wimmera Rivers.

In addition to the threat of flooding, landslides are a heightened risk due to the waterlogged ground softening soil and increasing the rate of water runoff.

Landslides last week caused roads to collapse and the Great Ocean Road remains closed today between Lorne and Separation Creek from structural damage. To make matters worse, the fire-ravaged landscape around Wye River is still exposed following the removal of buildings and vegetation after last year's bushfire. This may increase the risk of landslides in the area during the next 24 hours.

Call 132 500 if you require flood-related assistance, or dial 000 in a life-threatening emergency.
