WA Freezes Over

Joel Pippard, Saturday May 18, 2019 - 11:37 AEST

After a strong cold front moved over the southern half of Western Australia on Friday, many locations have awoken to a frosty morning.

Geraldton's chilly morning of 1.1 degrees was its coldest May morning in 71 years of records, and its coldest morning of any month since July 2010. This was a mammoth 12 degrees colder than their May average of 13 degrees.

The coldest location in the state was a chilly -3 degrees at Southern Cross, their coldest May morning in 12 years, followed by -2 degrees at Gingin, which beat their May record (23 year history).

Perth was not spared the chill, reaching a frigid two degrees in the city, and one degree at the airport. It hasn't been that cold in Perth City for 34 months, nor in the last seven Mays.

A slim ridge of high pressure moved in very quickly after Fridays' cold front, proving the perfect scenario for a big chill: a cold airmass, clear skies and light offshore winds. This high will also stick around on Sunday, making for another brisk morning ahead.
