Warmth on the way for WA

Guy Dixon, Wednesday September 17, 2014 - 13:05 AEST

Warmth is building over Western Australia before a dramatic change is due late this weekend.

Perth is shaping up to see a spell of warm days to finish off the week with forecast temperatures likely to be almost four degrees above average leading up to Saturday.

A broad low pressure trough is filtering warm air from the tropical north to the lower latitudes allowing for the mercury to rise to the mid-twenties for the rest of this week.

Saturday is likely to see the peak of the heat with a forecast maximum of 32 degrees. This would make it the warmest day felt in Perth since early April.

Hot north/northeasterly winds ahead of a looming cold front are looking exclude any real chance of a soothing sea breeze for coastal locations. In fact, most surrounding regional hubs will also see significant warmth with the thermometer likely to show the highest reading since early autumn.

As the front crosses the southwest on Sunday, temperatures will be noticeably cooler than the previous day with heavy showers and a west/southwesterly wind change highlighting the stark contrast. Isolated falls in excess of 20mm are a risk across the far southwest however the story doesn't end there.

The coolest airmass will trail the initial wind change bringing a maximum forecast temperature in the low twenties on Monday, potentially nine degrees cooler than two days prior. Thunderstorms are also a risk over southwestern parts of the state in the morning as an upper cold pool exacerbates lifting instability. The cool air should edge east and dissipate as the day progresses taking the potential for thunderstorms with it.

Lingering isolated showers are should slowly clear and temperatures should warm up in the wake of this system throughout next week.
