WA's desert drenching

Guy Dixon, Friday November 27, 2015 - 13:05 AEDT

Arid parts of Western Australia received a drenching overnight as thunderstorms passed overhead, with Meekatharra receiving more rain in ten minutes than they usually see in the whole month of November.

Just after 8pm, 12.4mm fell within a ten minute period at Meekatharra airport, surpassing the long term November average of 11.8mm in one fell swoop. The rain continued to a total of 26mm to 9am today, which makes it the heaviest November total since 1983.

As far as ten minute totals go, 12.4mm is a healthy figure and would often top the list from day to day. However on this occasion, the tropical location of Middle Point, NT managed to take the cake with a colossal 18mm within ten minutes.

It is not unusual for arid parts of WA to receive regular thunderstorms at this time of the year, with troughs commonly deepening over inland areas.

In the coming days, the area of greatest instability will gradually shift east and south confining thunderstorm potential with it. The Goldfields, South East Coastal, Eucla and South Interior present the greatest chances of seeing isolated thundery showers during early stages of the weekend.
