Welcome showers and thunderstorms for Victoria

Anthony Duke, Thursday October 8, 2015 - 15:29 AEDT

Showers and thunderstorms on the cards over the next few days will bring some welcome rain for very dry parts of western and central Victoria.

The first week of October saw virtually no rain over western and central districts of Victoria after they endured a dry winter. September didn't help much, bringing just 40 to 60% of the monthly average rainfall across the west. Whilst the strong front earlier this week brought a rapid temperature change, it brought no rain.

The good news is that some showery days are on the forecast. A trough is setting up over the southeast which will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms most days from Friday through to Sunday. A cold front will pass over the southeast towards the start of next week moving the tough and subsequent showers onwards.

Central and eastern districts will see the best rainfall with a decent 10-20mm accumulating over the 3 days. Unfortunately western districts will see less, but even 5mm would be the best rain in just over a month for some parts of the Mallee and Wimmera.

Next week, drier conditions will return as another high pressure system moves over the southeast.

Generation gone with the wind
