Western Australia looking to swelter

A run of hot days well above the January average are anticipated throughout Western Australia beginning from today.

The Australia Day long weekend may be an uncomfortable one for those in Australia's west, with daytime temperatures expected to peak in the high 30's to mid 40's across much of the state. This is thanks to a low pressure trough which has been deepening over the state over the past few days, filtering a hot inland airmass towards the south, and delaying a relieving cool seabreeze for much of the coast.

Temperatures look to peak in Perth on Monday with a top of 39 degrees expected, around 8 degrees above the January average. Moving inland, this heat should sustain longer into next week with Kalgoorlie expecting daytime temperatures to reach 44 degrees multiple days in a row. In the north, Exmouth is forecast to reach 41 degrees on both Sunday and Monday as offshore winds persist.

While peak heating may be brief in some regions, these hot conditions are expected to continue until Thursday of next week, when a strong cold front moves in from the southwest. This could bring a temperature change of as much as 10 degrees between Thursday and Friday, particularly for more inland areas.

Generation gone with the wind

The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
