Wet and windy weather to lash the southeast

With only a brief pause in wintry weather on Monday and Tuesday, Tasmania and Victoria are set to feel the brunt of yet another cold front.

A series of cold fronts has brought true wintery weather to southeastern Australia during the past week, leading to cold and windy weather for Tasmania and Victoria in particular. This included healthy rainfall totals, fresh snowfalls over the alps and highlands, and very windy conditions.

Now, another cold front has just started to impact the western parts of these states. Wind gusts in excess of 95km/h have been measured over Maatsuyker Island and Hogan Island early on Wednesday,

Sustained winds of 50-70km/h are expected across Victoria and Tasmania today and during Thursday as the front progresses eastward, with a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds currently in place for Victoria’s Central, East Gippsland, South West, North East and West and South Gippsland forecast districts.

Widespread rainfall of 5-10mm is expected during the next 48 hours, with heavier falls exceeding 20mm possible over the western parts of Tasmania. Most of the rainfall over the Victorian alps will fall as snow during the evening and early Thursday.

Rainfall over the southeastern parts of the country will dissipate on Thursday, although lingering strong winds prompting coastal wind warnings remain likely during the next 48 hours.
