Wet days for southwest WA

Sam Brown, Friday August 29, 2014 - 12:43 AEST

A cold front is continuing to bring heavy rain to the southwest of WA today, with some areas recording their heaviest August rain overnight in more than a century.

Donnybrook recorded 95mm of rain before 9am today, making it the heaviest August rain since near the start of last century, in 1907. Busselton airport received 45.2mm of rain overnight, allowing it to be the heaviest August rain in 15 years.

After a wet night, widespread falls of between 10-50mm are expected south of a line from Lancelin to Esperance today. This rain is expected to gradually become heavier throughout the day, before easing overnight. The heaviest of these falls is likely to be concentrated from about the Perth area and extending south nearer the coast.

Isolated thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching up to 30km/h are also a chance today with the passage of the front. A severe weather warning for damaging winds and heavy rain currently exists for the Lower West, South West, South Coastal and Great Southern districts.

As the front moves further east, showers and winds will ease tomorrow, although some areas around Perth may still see up to 15mm. Onshore winds in the wake of the system may bring a few more showers along coastal areas on Sunday.

A ridge should then clear the southwest on Monday, however cloud will remain a dominant feature.
